UFC 117 Recap: Silva Stunned
This past weekend UFC Betting fans surrounded the Octagon at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California for UFC 117. The UFC betting news was highlighted with the main event of Anderson “The Spider” Silva taking on UFC newcomer Chael Sonnen. Going into the main event, Sonnen had talked some serious smack to Silva and many fans betting on the UFC were hoping Silva would shut this guy up.
However for 23 of the 25 minutes allotted for the championship fight, Sonnen looked to be proving his critics wrong by really taking the fight to Silva. Nevertheless, as many die hard MMA fans will tell you, this is Anderson Silva after all and after Sonnen failed to connect with one of his moves, it was all Silva. Silva finally put Sonnen away in the final two minutes of the fight, by locking him in a triangle armbar choke.
Fans found out after the fight, that Silva and Sonnen made history in their first encounter. Throughout the UFC’s 20 year history, only two other fights aside from Silva v. Sonnen have ended by knockout or submission in the fifth and final round. Those were Couture v. Rodriguez at UFC 39 and BJ Penn v. Sanchez at UFC 107.
Aside from the main event, some of the other highlights on the card included Matt Hughes defeating Ricardo Almedia and John Fitch defeating Thiago Alves. In Hughes v. Almedia, Hughes debuted a new finishing move as he defeated Almedia in the first round via modified front headlock.
Conversely, Fitch v. Alves did not live up to the hype, as it went to a unanimous decision win by Fitch. From all signs, Fitch and Alves may be put in a category no fighter would like their match to be in, the most boring match of the night.
